Having a cockatiel has brought so much joy and happiness into my life that I feel it’s important to highlight some of Cookie’s character traits that made me fall in love with him. Believe it or not, even a small incident involving a bird as tiny as a fledgling can disrupt your routine, as it did mine. I got Cookie, my cockatiel, a year ago, and he’s my first pet. Initially, my emotions were a mix of excitement and fear. I wasn’t used to caring for such a small and delicate creature. I felt a deep responsibility to provide him with the proper care he needed. Despite my mixed feelings, the moment Cookie first landed near me, I took him to heart. To me, he embodies sweetness and playful energy.
Every morning, Cookie wakes me up with his cheerful chirping. There isn’t a day that goes by without me laughing when I hear him singing from his cage. Before I start my work, I always make sure he has fresh food and water, and I spend a few minutes with him. Cookie loves to whistle back at me, and he’s even learned to mimic some of the words I say. One of my favorite moments is when Cookie spreads his wings and listens to the sounds of the birds and the wind, flying around the apartment as if he’s inspecting every corner. These days, though, he prefers landing on my shoulder, sitting close to my ear. It’s such a cozy feeling knowing Cookie trusts me more than anyone else to hold him.
Living with Cookie has taught me the true essence of responsibility and compassion. Caring for him has made me more attentive to animals’ needs, and in turn, I’ve become more patient and gentler. On days when I’m feeling down, he has a way of lifting my spirits with his silly tricks and cheerful chirps. I feel incredibly fortunate to have Cookie in my life. While we’ve already made so many great memories, I’m excited about creating many more in the years to come.
